What to Pack

Your packing list will of course vary depending on your destination, as well as the time of year and weather. But experience has taught us that these general packing tips will help your family have a more comfortable and relaxing vacation.


  • Short and long sleeve shirts
  • Shorts, slacks, and jeans
  • T-shirts
  • Plenty of socks and underwear
  • Light-weight jacket or windbreaker
  • Comfortable walking shoes (already been broken in!)
  • Raincoat or poncho
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Hats with wide brims to protect from sun


  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Band-Aids and first-aid items
  • Aspirin or other pain reliever
  • Small plug-in nightlight
  • Children's fever medicine, cold medicine, etc.
  • Binoculars
  • Notebooks/journals
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and plenty of film
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling
  • Debit/ATM cards (make sure these work in the country you're visiting)
  • Travelers' checks if needed
  • Outlet adapters that adapt to the US standard of 110 V, 60 Hz, AC (for travel to Europe)
  • In-transit entertainment for kids, such as portable MP3 players and DVD players, books and magazines, and travel-size games
  • Snacks for flights, train rides, etc
