Vacation Overview

This is the perfect vacation for those who are interested in World War II, historical Poland, and the concentration camps that are living memorials of those dark days. Start in Warsaw with guided sightseeing and a visit to St. John’s Cathedral. Also visit the Warsaw Rising Museum, before continuing to Krakow. A special visit to the Oskar Schindler Factory, made famous in the movie Schindler’s List has been included. Stroll around the Kazimierz quarter and visit the Remuh Synagogue. Visit what is left of the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps, and in Wroclaw, admire the cathedral and the market square. Continue to Dresden, badly damaged during the war but now restored to its baroque splendor, and visit the courtyard of Zwinger Palace during your guided walking tour. Also enjoy a special dinner with local specialties in the well-known Am Pulverturm restaurant. Stop in Torgau, to see the monument commemorating the meeting of US and Soviet forces during World War II, and visit the courtyard of Hartenfels Castle, before arriving in Berlin, where guided sightseeing includes a visit to the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Also see Checkpoint Charlie, and a fascinating guided visit has been included to the Unterwelten Bunker. Continue to Weimar, and enjoy a pleasant walk through this pretty town, followed by a visit to the former Buchenwald concentration camp. In Nuremberg, visit the Memorium Nuremberg Trials and Room 600 (if available), the impressive Documentation Center, and Zeppelin Field. Of course a special dinner at Bratwurst Röslein restaurant gives you the opportunity to taste the traditional Nürnberger Bratwürste. Before arriving in Munich, visit the former Dachau concentration camp. In Munich, explore lively Marienplatz, and a full day at leisure gives you the opportunity to join an optional excursion to Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest (available only from mid-May to end-September and weather-permitting). Enjoy a farewell dinner with your traveling companions to share your feelings after this exciting and emotional encounter with World War II.

"Munich, Germany

"Munich, Germany's Secret Capital"

"Munich is the only German metropolis that seems to have everything – wealth, beauty, prominence, fame. Some even call it Germany’s “secret capital.” Unlike Berlin, which some dub “architecturally challenged,” Munich bursts with historical buildings reconstructed after the devastation of World War II. Its grand Residenz, the former home of Bavarian kings, dominates the city center, which also boasts the flamboyant, gilded Cuvillié Theater. Nearby, the neo-gothic Neues Rathaus gives a medieval touch to the Marienplatz, the heart of Munich. "

WERNER HARTLIEB

Years of Experience: 21 years

I enjoy sharing insights about the always-changing countries of Central Europe. What I like just as much, if not more, is the camaraderie that guests form. With each tour, I am astonished by this. A group of strangers at the start, they get acquainted with each other in a pleasant way and sometimes take home friendships for life. I think it is great this takes place while exploring new regions and discovering new cultures.
