Day 1 Arrive in San José, Costa Rica

Welcome to Costa Rica. Upon arrival, you will be met by your Tour Director, who will help you check into your hotel.

Day 2 San José­–Cariari–Tortuguero National Park

Journey east to the Caribbean shore and TORTUGUERO NATIONAL PARK. On the way, stop at a BANANA PLANTATION to see one of Costa Rica’s main exports being harvested. Later, board a motor launch for your CRUISE along the Tortuguero Canals, waterways crisscrossing a national park dedicated to the protection of endangered turtles. The trained eyes of your guide and boatman help you spot freshwater turtles, caimans, herons, toucans, egrets, and monkeys. An afternoon at leisure lets you explore Evergreen Lodge until you meet for an informative slideshow presentation on the area.

Day 3 Tortuguero National Park Tour & Canal Cruise

A local Naturalist accompanies you on a leisurely BOAT RIDE along remote, unspoiled sections of the park’s waterways, explaining the bountiful flora and fauna. Enjoy a fascinating stroll through an accessible portion of the nearby RAINFOREST. During the peak nesting season (mid-July to mid-October) you may be lucky enough to observe an endangered green turtle laying her eggs under the starlight on an optional tour.

Day 4 Tortuguero–Arenal

A morning boat transfer begins your journey to the San Carlos area. Tour a Globus Local FavoriteGlobus Local Favorite PINEAPPLE PLANTATION, owned by a local family, and learn about the history, cultivation, and industry of pineapples. Continue to your hotel in the lush town of Arenal, located in the shadow of Arenal Volcano. After settling in, experience the magic of the resort’s pool and hot spring-fed jacuzzi or consider a walk in the nearby nature trail in search of 300- to 400-year-old trees, poisonous frogs, monkeys, birds, and possibly small animals native to the area.

Day 5 Arenal. Excursion to Arenal Volcano

During your morning at leisure, you may wish to go on an optional horseback ride or float trip. Or, you can take advantage of your resort's amenities by walking along the shaded trails nearby. Later this afternoon, enjoy a walking tour of the town of La Fortuna de San Carlos, offering spectacular views of the active Arenal Volcano. Visit NATURA PARK, where a Naturalist takes you on a guided tour of this ecological park that is home to a wide variety of plants and animals from the region. During your walk, keep an eye out for the toucans, iguanas, frogs, birds, butterflies, and caimans commonly seen here. Next, drive to nearby famous Globus Local FavoriteGlobus Local Favorite TABACÓN HOT SPRINGS for a dip in the curative and relaxing pools. Later, enjoy a dinner at the hot springs.

Day 6 Arenal–Monteverde

After breakfast, continue to MONTEVERDE, where you will enjoy two days in the cloud forest. This afternoon, take a guided tour on the SKYWALK hanging bridges, which combines trails and suspension bridges through the canopy of Monteverde Cloud Forest, to search for flora and fauna.

Day 7 Monteverde

This morning, visit SANTA ELENA CLOUD FOREST RESERVE for a walking tour. Located on the Continental Divide of Costa Rica, the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve comprises an area of 765 acres, and is home to forest fauna such as the resplendent quetzal, jaguars, ocelots, monkeys, and numerous species of birds. With almost 100% humidity throughout the year, the cloud forest experiences almost 12 feet of rain per year. Later, visit the family-owned Globus Local FavoriteGlobus Local Favorite TRAPICHE FARM, where you will enjoy a homemade lunch. While here, learn about the production of sugar cane, coffee, and the traditional ways of cultivating bananas, arracacha (a local legume), avocado, macadamia nuts, as well as other products. The remainder of your day is at leisure. Tonight, your Tour Director hosts a farewell dinner, toasting an unforgettable discovery of Costa Rica.

Day 8 Monteverde–Guanacaste

Take a morning drive to Guanacaste. This part of Costa Rica’s North Pacific region offers hundreds of unspoiled beaches lining the shores, but Guanacaste is far from a traditional beach destination. Activities in the area include rainforest canopy tours, river rafting or floating down the Corobici River, horseback riding, fishing, snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean, or just relaxing on the beach.

If you are a true nature lover, it should come as no surprise that what you see during the day in the rainforest isn't the same as at night. This tour gives you the opportunity to see nocturnal animals that only appear after nightfall. Starting around 5 pm, view the gorgeous sunset before venturing into the rainforest. As you start walking, your guide will explain the different sounds of the rainforest and to which animal they belong. From this moment on, it's important to keep your eyes open for what might appear from darkness. In the rainforest you can find a wide variety of nocturnal animals: spiders (most commonly, tarantulas), tree frogs, sloths, armadillos, and snakes, to mention a few. Listen to your guide's explanation of these animals, keeping very still so you don't scare them off. Your nocturnal hike will take about two hours, after which you will be left with a completely different perspective of Costa Rican wildlife.

This tour is a total adrenaline rush! The zipline system consists of a network of suspended cables that go from one platform to another and that will let you zip from tree to tree over the forest. The platforms were carefully built on ancient, tall trees in the midst of the tropical dry forest, and allow you to fly between the trees and see the wildlife up in the treetops. This is a perfectly safe activity, performed while wearing safety harnesses and other safety equipment that will be provided on-site.

At this breathtaking spot overlooking the Pacific Ocean in areas, you will be able to slide from tree to tree on a ten-cable Canopy Tour, with 12 stations and a hanging bridge, providing great opportunities to be in contact with nature. Spot some of the Costa Rican wildlife, such as howler monkeys, keel-billed toucans or coatis. After flying through the canopy, you'll walk into the forest to get to the top of the 400-meter (1,300 ft) waterslide, where a refreshing pool awaits you at the bottom. You can even enjoy a number of restaurants in the area! Afterward, horses will be waiting for you to take you to the Spa in the middle of the forest; a 45-minute ride will reveal more of the property's flora and fauna in diverse topographies. At the Spa you will find a steam room, perfect to open your pores and let the volcanic mud do its job of rejuvenating your skin and making you feel revitalized. After you've let the mud get a bit dry, you will be able to take a shower to wash it off and enjoy the rest of the afternoon in the mineral hot spring pools, all at various temperatures, distributed around this peaceful spa..

By traveling through this river on a motor boat, you'll find around 12 different types of habitats, including four different species of mangrove trees, 55 aquatic plants and 150 species of trees, like the one from which the Park's name is taken: Palo Verde, a shrub with leafy branches and a pale green trunk. The area boasts the largest numbers of aquatic birds in the Mesoamerican region from September to May, like the Jabirus and the Scarlet macaw, both of which are endangered species. After lunch, explore Liberia, known as the White City, a name that comes from whitewashed colonial houses built of bahareque (similar to adobe houses).Calle Real (Royal Street) will take you back in colonial times, as you enjoy the opportunity to appreciate the daily life of the people from this picturesque place, its history, its handcrafts and the nearby stores.

Rincon de la Vieja National Park

Rincon de la Vieja National Park

Rincon de la Vieja is one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica. Towering with nine extraordinary eruption points, at over 6,200 feet high, it is part of the Guanacaste Mountain Range. This rigorous but spectacular hike around the area of Las Pailas will reveal hundreds of species of animals, insects and butterflies, extraordinary vegetation and numerous waterways like the Colorado River and the Rio Blanco. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded to live within the park, like emerald tucanets, and long-tailed manakins. Three different species of monkeys and other extraordinary animals also know this place as their home. And you'll have the chance to glimpse the wild purple orchids protected by this area.
