Gems of Umbria & Tuscany with Sorrento (LTE)

12 Day Tour from Rome to Sorrento

2016 Tour Details

The name of this Italy tour—Gems of Umbria & Tuscany—says it all, as you’ll visit some of the medieval hill towns and see some of the beautiful gems that call central Italy home. You’ll begin and end in Rome, and in between you’ll overnight in Spoleto, San Martino in Campo, Siena, and Orvieto.

History fans will be thrilled throughout this Umbria and Tuscany tour. As you travel through the towns in these regions, learn about the Etruscans and see remains from periods throughout Italy’s history. Orvieto has a labyrinth of caves carved by Etruscans, and you’ll visit these caves as well as Orvieto’s cathedral, dating back to the early 14th century. In Siena, one of Italy's best-preserved medieval towns, you’ll walk through its Piazza del Campo, one of Europe’s finest piazzas. From Siena, you'll also take an excursion to Volterra, an important Etruscan city, and San Gimignano, a picturesque, perfectly preserved medieval town. In Narni, a guided visit of the Convent of San Domenico basement reveals a cell where prisoners of the Inquisition wrote graffiti on the walls.

Of course, these regions are known not only for history, but also for wine and olive oil. That’s why we’ve arranged a wine tasting in the Tuscan Hills and an olive oil tasting in Frantoio di Spello—just two of the unique experiences offered by Globus! From the historic gems and the wonderful piazzas to the special adventures, this Umbria and Tuscany tour offers all of this and much more.

Then, at the conclusion of your tour, travel by high-speed train to beautiful Sorrento for three nights. Enjoy a guided walking tour and time to explore on your own. All services in Sorrento, including Local Host assistance, are provided by Monograms. A vacation of a lifetime!

Excursion to Monteriggioni and Tuscan Farm Dinner

Excursion to Monteriggioni and Tuscan Farm Dinner

Nested on a natural hillock about 12 miles (20 km) from Siena, Monteriggioni is undoubtedly one of the most classical, well preserved and best known medieval walled towns. Even the Italian poet Dante Alighieri mentions his 'round enclosure' in the Divine Comedy (Hell, chant XXXI vv. 40-41). The town was built by the Senesis in the 13th century and its ideal position allowed them to control the Elsa and Staggia Valleys in the direction of Florence, the historic enemy of Siena, that at that time was rapidly expanding its territory. The walls, nearly intact, cover a length of 570 meters and are alternated by 14 towers and two gates, the Senese Gate and the Florence Gate. Recently a part of the wall walk of the town walls has been restored and made accessible. From the top of the walled circuit, it is possible to admire the surrounding Chianti countryside. After the visit let us spoil you with a delicious 4-course dinner, including unlimited drinks, in a traditional family owned agriturismo (farmhouse). Taste locally produced wines, Italian antipasti, home made pasta and much more.

Cassino Abbey, World War II Cemetery & Museum

Cassino Abbey, World War II Cemetery & Museum

Monte Cassino Abbey is situated at the top of a hill with spectacular views over the city of Cassino. The Abbey was founded in 523BC and has become a world-wide famous site for the art and culture along the centuries. Steeped in history, it has been destroyed and rebuilt four times in its 1400 years. The most recent and infamous destruction was during the 1944 battle of Monte Cassino in World War II. Because of its strategic position, it was occupied by the German forces and used as vantage point to attack the allied forces advancing from the South of Italy. The basilica, which is richly decorated in stucco and mosaics, contains the relics of St. Benedict and his sister St. Scholastica, who survived the bombings. Later, visit the beautifully maintained Commonwealth War Cemetery, where many of the soldiers who fell during the battle are buried. After free time for lunch, visit the World War II museum, where different exhibitions commemorate those, of all nationalities, who lost their life in the battle.
