Arenal Volcano Hike Tour Known worldwide for its near perfect cone shape, Arenal Volcano has become a must-see destination when coming to Costa Rica. Its volcanic activity and its surrounding natural beauty make this a very exciting hiking tour. Ever since the 1500s, locals considered Arenal to be a mountain. However, everything changed on the morning of July 29, 1968, when the supposed mountain suddenly erupted. The eruptions continued non-stop for several days, covering with lava, rocks and ash more than 15 square kilometers, affecting three towns and its crops, livestock, and properties. From that time until 2010, Arenal Volcano was quite active, often spewing out rocks, lava, ash and smoke. You can still see parts of green on the northern and southern parts of the volcano; however, the greatest green area is on the east side. You will begin your tour on one of the closest trails around the Arenal Volcano, which will allow you to see the area that was destroyed in the 1968 eruption and is now regenerating, as well as the forest through which there have been recent lava flows. The hike around the National Park using this trail lasts about 2.5 hours and you will learn more about this world famous "Mountain of Fire" and enjoy the thrill of hiking near this active volcano.
